This will put the icing on the cake 🙂

If you read my previous post you’ll know how to make cupcakes, but the fun part is decorating cupcakes. You can even decorate chocolate cupcakes.

There are three very simple ways to decorate cupcakes:-

  • Jam and Fresh Cream
  • Icing
  • Sugar Icing

By the way, what works for cupcakes can also work for other cakes.  And please be kind about my photo images – I’m not a professional cake decorator 🙂

So let’s get started.

Decorating Cupcakes – Jam and Fresh Cream

  • Scoop a circle from the top of each cupcake to create a ‘hole’
  • Put a spoonful of red jam in each hole and top with whipped fresh cream
  • Place the circle back on top
  • Just use jam for a super quick option

Decorating Cupcakes – Icing

  • Mix together icing sugar and enough lemon or lime juice to create a smooth, thick consistency
  • Spread on top of each cupcake and allow to set
  • You can add milk/soy or even water to the icing sugar if you prefer
  • Add a little food colouring and lollies if you wish

To be honest, this is not my favourite (I find it too ‘buttery’), but you might want to give it a try.  Use a cup measure to keep things simple – the cup should hold approx 250g / 8 ml of liquid.

  • Mix together approx 125g of butter (or usual spread), one and half cups of icing sugar and 2 Tablespoons of milk/soy to form a smooth, thick consistency
  • Spread on top of cupcakes
  • Add food colouring and lollies if you wish
  • This is a a great option if you’re making a child’s birthday cake – the kids seem to love sugar icing

What did I tell you, cupcake decorating is quick and easy – and I’m told they taste just as good with very average decorating skills 🙂

  1. Put the icing on the cake! Such an obvious cliche, but so appropriate here! LOL!
(You know I’m just going to show up at your doorstep unannounced, one of these days…)

  2. Wow Jan, it sure looks like great fun putting icing on the cup cakes. They all look sooooo delicious. Too good to eat! 😉

  3. Thanks Cherie,
Yes, we had a lot of fun decorating the cupcakes. But I had to take the photos quickly because they didn’t last long 🙂

My mouth is watering just looking at these pictures! Im not sure I would be good at decorating cupcakes though…. but I would love to give the ones with jam a go!

  7. Hi Tegan,
As you can see from my images, I’m not an expert decorator. The jam ones are super easy – and a dollop of fresh cream makes them irresistible 🙂
