Many thanks to Jane Johnson for writing this guest post about The Best Quick and Healthy Meal Apps – meals that go from stove top to family table top in minutes flat!

This website is all about tasty food that is quick and easy to prepare.  Click here for the latest post.  Jamie’s Crispy Salmon has been very popular.

Here’s what Jane has to say about Food Apps

If you’re a busy mom like I am, providing a quick and healthy yet delicious meal for my family every evening of the week can be a challenge – especially if I have less than 30-minutes to get dinner on the table and gobbled down between the time my two boys arrive home from school and jet out the door for soccer or hockey practice.

I’m convinced that providing yummy, healthy meals in record time is the ultimate mom or dad superpower! My kids are always on the go – and guess who has to drive them there? Mom’s personal taxi service of course! With so many school, recreation, and social demands on our family schedule, dinner used to come in a bucket on the way to the sports field. However, I’ve since realized that family dinners are an important break in the day to fuel up, connect with loved ones, and unwind after a hurried day at school or work. So I made a point on making them an essential part of our hectic day.

Today, we eat family meals together – as quick as they might be – for the health benefits (I do sneak a decent serving of fruits and veggies into each meal), for the bonding opportunity (so I hear what’s happening in my kids’ lives), and to teach my kids healthy eating habits for the future.

With such a hectic schedule, you’d better bet I rely on smart phone technology to help me get a nutritious family meal on the table in record time.

Here are the apps that I use for quick and healthy meal inspiration:

Eating Well Healthy in a Hurry (Free – for iPhone)

Thank goodness for T-Mobile wireless internet! Without it, I wouldn’t have access to apps like EatingWell Healthy in a Hurry, from the award-winning magazine and website of the same name. This app puts quick and healthy recipes right at my fingertips – so I can use it when I plan out our weekly dinners (which I do every Sunday), shop for groceries, and whip up a gourmet-style family meal in less than 10 minutes flat! Looking at all the recipes in this app, you’d be astonished that the majority of the 200 recipes take less than 15 minutes to prepare – with no prep longer than 45-minutes. You can search recipes by meal, cuisine type, time allotment, and more. I even use the ethnic collection once a week to spice things up around my household. And you can be assured that all recipes are professionally tested for delectability, nutrition, and speed so you’re kids will mistake you for a superhero – without the mask and cape, of course!

Jamie’s 20 Minute Meals ($7.99 – for Android)

Maybe the Naked Chef has no place in your kitchen before the kids get home from school, but Jamie Oliver can certainly help you whip up a delicious, nutritious family meal in under 20 minute with his app, 20 Minute Meals! This app features 60 of Jamie’s very own delicious recipes – complete with shopping lists that sort your ingredient need by aisle to help you navigate the grocery store like a pro, plus step by step cooking instructions, photos, and even videos of the Naked Chef himself, providing useful cooking tips and kitchen techniques like chopping skills.

Cooking Light Recipes: Quick and Healthy Menu Maker ($3.99 – for iPhone)

My mouth waters just writing about the Cooking Light Recipes: Quick and Healthy Menu Maker app! Jam-packed full of more than 300 healthy meal options that you can prepare in a snap! Browse recipes by main ingredient – such as poultry, beef, pork, fish, or vegetarian – or by type, such as side dish, snack, or dessert. This app provides practical kitchen tools like a real time nutrition calculator that counts your calories as you add ingredients, cooking and shopping tips, plus a bookmark feature so you can save and quickly access those family favorites!

Quick Meals (Free – for Android)

Looking for a fast and healthy meal idea that you can get on the table in less than 15 minutes? The Quick Meals app makes it possible with its huge database of easy recipes that can be made between 15- and 30ñminutes. This database has a huge user-following, where readers are encouraged to submit their recipes – and they do so frequently – so you’re meal inspiration will never fall flat. Plus, you can share your favorite recipes right from the app to your social networks (such as Facebook or Twitter) and give the other parents on your friends’ list an inferiority complex when it comes to what their feeding their families.

Thanks again to Jane Johnson for writing this guest post. As well as being a busy mum of two boys, Jane’s a staff writer for GoingCellular, a popular site that provides cell phone news, commentary and reviews. I hope you’ve enjoyed reading her suggestions for the best quick and easy meal apps.

Isn’t it amazing how apps have so quickly become part of our lives. There’s some great apps here, thank you for the info. I use the Woollies app sometimes, great marketing tool for Woollies but convenient also providing a recipe and the aisle numbers where the products can be found.

Interesting article, I don’t have a smart phone, however this might be a good reason to get one.

  3. Hi Kerry and Compost King,

  4. It is so amazing how Apps growing so rapidly now even found a lot of the restaurant doing apps ordering! How cool is that?

  5. Hi Jan, great ideas about the phone apps for healthy meals in a hurry. I have a windows phone so I’ll be checking out what apps are available there 🙂 Thanks to Jane for writing the post

  6. Thanks for sharing the phone apps.
Being a horse rider and wanting to spend most of my time outside, rather than in the kitchen. A phone app means I can plan my meals on the run so to speak. Its all about saving time and still having a sustaining meal with out all the fuss.
    Thanks 🙂
